Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption takes place from 1947 to 1965. After accused of murdering his wife and the man she was having an affair with, Andy Dufresne is sent to Shawshank Prison. He is greeted by brutal treatment from guards, the warden, and his fellow inmates. After a brutal initiation into Shawshank Prison, Andy befriends an Irish man Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding. Red is in Shawshank Prison for murder as well, and is known as the man who can get things. He has a talent for procuring items of luxury from the outside world that are more valuable than gold inside the prison wall of Shawshank. Red is confused when Andy asks him for a rock hammer. Red is suspicious of him but gets him the hammer because of Andy's story that he carves chess pieces. Little does Red know, Andy fully intends to escape from Shawshank prison by carving through the rock wall in his cell. Andy is determined to keep his mind occupied to maintain his sanity as this is a long process. During his time at Shawshank, he starts a library, helps a young man with his studying, and assists the guards and the warden with their taxes. However, not all of Any's experiences are positive. He fights off rape from a brutal gang, deals with the death of his friends, and often challenges the warden's authority, landing him in solitary confinement. Because of Andy's value as a worker, the warden is determined to keep him at Shawshank Prison. Even evidence from a fellow inmate that proves Andy's innocence, the warden refuses to acknowledge it and has the other inmate murdered. Andy decides that after 19 years in prison, he can take it no longer. His tunnel is finished. It is originally covered by a Rita Hayworth poster, but over the course of his captivity, several posters of women cover his future escape route. After successfully stealing all of the items he needs for identity theft of the warden, Andy Dufresne escapes from Shawshank Prison. He then obtains almost 400,000 dollars of the warden's money causing his resignation, and then heads for Mexico. Red is not far behind him as he is released for rehabilitation and begins his journey for Mexico as well.Brooks is a man that has been at Shawshank prison for over 40 years. He is used as the motif of being changed or "institutionalized" by extended periods of time in prison. After such a long period in prison, he cannot function normally with the speed and the complexity of the outside world. It is the same feeling Red gets when he too is released. He also keeps a crow named Jake which he feeds until it is strong enough to fly free. This is symbolic of Brook's desire to leave Shawshank in the way that the crow leaving means that he lost his desire to leave the prison himself. He almost kills one of the inmates when he receives the information that he will be released.
